Protect Yourself: Get A Shingles Vaccine (if you’re over 60)

I highly encourage anyone 60+ to get a Shingles Vaccine! You’re WORTH IT!!!

I have experienced one severe shingles flair up and one mild one. I never want to experience that pain and blistering again.

Shingles is a rash that can be quite severe and extremely painful leaving permanent disfigurement. I still have the scars on my chest and underarm where mine flared up (it often follows the nerve pathways). (It is common to get the rash on your face—Imagine having permanent scaring from that!)

Symptoms include rash, fever, headache, chills and upset stomach..

Shingles is NOT contagious, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Shingles is caused by the chicken pox virus when you were a child. The virus hides in your body and can surface and cause shingles many years later.

See a complete explanation of Shingles and Shingles Vaccine on this pdf from the Centers for Disease Control http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/pubs/vis/downloads/vis-shingles.pdf

The shingles vaccine is quite expensive but worth it. But it is hard to find where it is offered.

I just got my Shingles Vaccine at Rite Aid—Kirkland.

Rite Aid – Kirkland
12421 Totem Lake Boulevard NE
Kirkland, WA 98034
Phone: (425) 821-1500

Cost was $222.99 at Rite Aid in Kirkland. (I was told $300 at Safeway last year.) My insurance doesn’t cover it so I wasn’t eager to spend the money BUT I NEVER want to experience that pain, itching and blistering again.

My vaccination experience was completely painless (although she told me to expect a pinch).

I highly encourage anyone 60+ to get a Shingles Vaccine!

You’re WORTH IT!!!

Warmest, Julie Hutton
